LIBERAL Democrat Cllr Tony Greaves has urged Pendle Council to step up efforts to develop 'brownfield' land in the South Valley area of Colne.

He highlighted the Spring Gardens and Stanley Mills sites as suitable for homes.

Cllr Greaves, who represents Waterside ward, has submitted a motion to Tuesday's Full Council meeting of the borough urging it to conduct 'urgent discussions' with the landowners to release them for house building.

He warned unless such action was taken, it would lead to the development of 'unacceptable amounts of greenfield land in unacceptable locations'.

Pendle borough's Conservative leader Cllr Paul White said: "Cllr Greaves knows very well the council tried recently to bring Spring Gardens Mill into its ownership.

"We established and promote the Brownfield Fund, to bring sites forward for redevelopment. I remain of the view that South Valley should be brought forward for housing."
