A ROAD was closed following a 'serious road crash'.

Police shut Burnley Road near the junction of Red Lees Road, Cliviger, at around 5pm today.

Several emergency service vehicles, including an air ambulance, were deployed to the scene.

It is believed the air ambulance departed at around 6pm.

A member of staff at The Ram Inn, on Burnley Road, said: "I saw a few ambulances whizzing past and police cars and saw an air ambulance. I have heard people say it was a crash.

"The air ambulance was there for about 15 to 20 minutes and went off again. The other emergency vehicles have stayed for quite some time. It seemed serious."

Officers were still at the scene at 7pm but police have yet to release details about the incident.

The road re-opened some time before 8pm.
