THE Met Office has issued a weather warning for snow and ice in the North West.

The yellow warning will be in place until 10am tomorrow and covers parts of East Lancashire including Blackburn, Accrington and Burnley.

Icy patches and wintry showers are expected on Sunday night and early on Monday which could cause travel disruption.

Some roads and railways could be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

While forecasters have warned there could be icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

They have also warned people of the risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: "It's very windy out there at the moment.

"We've got bands of sleet and snow pushing eastwards through the morning, and this will clear to heavy showers through the day.

"There's a cold north-westerly wind with gales around the coast."

It comes as parts of Britain are waking up to snow on Sunday as gales batter the country throughout the day.
