Pupils from an East Lancashire high school were left deep in the trenches when they got the chance to handle artefacts from the First World War.

During an interactive workshop run by Bill Smith, a teacher at Skipton Academy who runs Great War workshops, year eight students from Darwen Vale High School had the opportunity to dress in soldiers uniforms as well as gain a deeper understanding of the life of a soldier.

In the visit, which took place on Tuesday, pupils not only learned about what was included in a soldier's kit, but discovered that those fighting in the First World War had to wear two identification tags at all times.

This was so that if they died another soldier could take one tag as proof of death and the second was to identify the body when/if it was found.

Overall, the pupils really enjoyed the workshop and were able to reflect on the experience of a soldier as well as the impact of injuries and death on fellow soldiers, family and friends.

The workshops are looking to be run full-time in schools across the region from September.
