A ROMANIAN man caught shoplifting in Nottinghamshire repeated the offence in Nelson three weeks later.

Blackburn magistrates heard Sebastian Banu claimed he was being driven by others who Jonathan Taylor, defending, said were clearly exploiting his desperate situation.

Banu, 21, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft of five bottles of whiskey and coffee worth £167 from Morrisons in Retford and theft of three bottles of Jack Daniels worth £96 from Morrisons in Nelson.

He was sentenced to 42 days in prison suspended for six months.

Sentencing District Judge James Clarke said he didn't accept the thefts had been spontaneous.

"You were part of an organised group driving from one place to another," said District Judge Clarke. "I suggest you speak to the probation service who may be able to help with accommodation.

"What they won't be able to do is find you new friends which I suggest may be a good idea."

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Banu had come to the UK one month ago expecting to find work.

"When the work wasn't forthcoming he became desperate for money and fell in with some people who were exploiting him," said Mr Taylor.

"He doesn't wish to say too much about the people who were assisting in this offending and no doubt benefiting far more than he was."
