AN innocent mother was the victim of a shotgun attack in her home in Accrington after a drugs feud escalated, a court heard.

And the gang behind the shooting of Shabir Begum’s house later phoned one of her son’s friends and warned him his mother “was going to be next”, Preston Crown Court was told.

Prosecutors say the intended target, when the home in Richmond Road, Accrington, was shot at in June 2017, was her son Waheed Hussain, who owed a drugs debt.

Mrs Begum was hit in her head, arm and leg by flying glass but not seriously hurt.

The shooting happened just a month after another house, in Beaconsfield Street, Haslingden, had also been targeted by a shotgun attack, the court was told.

Prosecutor Keith Sutton said the Haslingden gunman had been targeting Hafizur Rahman but he shot the front door of his brother Sadiqur, who lived next door with his wife and children.

Mr Sutton told jurors that in both cases, the gunman was alleged to be Kassam Nadeem, 27.

One day after the Accrington shooting, he was travelling in a BMW southbound along the M6 when a police patrol intervened and urged the driver to pull off at the next exit.

Mr Sutton said that instead, the BMW swerved back onto the motorway. When the police caught up with the car, after rejoining the M6, Nadeem was a passenger.

He told the court a member of public drove up and informed officers he had seen something being thrown out of a vehicle at junction 19. Police returned to the junction and recovered a shotgun.

When forensic checks were carried out on the weapon, it is said to have contained Nadeem’s DNA.

Nadeem, of no fixed address, denies two charges of conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to cause violence and possession of a sawn-off shotgun.

Umar Hamid, 27, of no fixed address, denies involvement in the Accrington and Haslingden conspiracies, Hasriat Khan, 32, of Moorland View, Ramsbottom, denies being part of the Haslingden shooting alone.

Ikhlaq Hussain, 30, of no fixed address, Abid Hussain, 33 and Amar Hussain, 27, both of Higher Antley Street, Accrington, deny involvement in the Accrington shooting.

Louis Ojapah, 26, of Peel Street, Liverpool, denies involvement in the Accrington shooting alone. The trial continues.
