POLICE investigating a basement fire at a house have declared it was started accidentally.
Firefighters and police were called to a terraced house in Knowsley Street, Colne, at 5.10am on Monday.
Inspector Lee Turner said the fire started in the basement.
Officers and the fire service's investigation team remained at the house for several hours.
Neighbours said they heard screams from inside the house and two women and a man were put inside a fire engine while the blaze was extinguished.
Another Knowsley Street resident said they were not told to leave their house as the fire service had the fire under control quickly.
A police spokesman said the fire was initially treated as suspicious, however investigations have revealed the cause was accidental.
No one suffered any injuries.
