AN investigation has been launched after a fire broke out at a house.

Firefighters and police officers were called to a terraced house in Knowsley Street, Colne, at 5.10am.

Inspector Lee Turner said the fire had started in the basement.

Lancashire Telegraph:

Police officers, along with the fire service's investigation team, were seen going into the house this morning.

Knowsley Street resident Philip Hartley, said he was woken up in the early hours due to what was going on next door.

He said: "I could hear a young lad screaming next door.

"It woke me up and I was worried about what was going on.

"The next thing I heard was a loud bang at my door which turned out to be firefighters asking to get to my cellar.

"Luckily the fire didn't spread over to my house, which was fortunate as I'm currently renovating it."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Another Knowsley Street resident said they were not told to leave their house as the fire service had the fire under control quickly.

She said: "Two women and a man were put into the fire engine outside and sat there for a while.

"I didn't know where they went but I think they were okay.

"I was badly burnt some years ago and I was worried the fire might spread and I could get hurt again."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Inspector Turner said: "We have officers at the scene and the cause of the fire is currently being investigated.

"No one suffered any injuries, but there's damage to the basement of the house.

"The situation could have potentially been much worse, given the fire was in a terraced house."

A police spokesman said the fire is being treated as 'suspicious'.
