WE take a trip down memory lane when some of Lancashire’s upper crust comes home to a splendid breakfast in April 1898.

Mayors, magistrates, MPs and clergymen from around the county joined the recently appointed High Sheriff W B Huntington in a large marquee in the grounds of his home, Woodlands, in the Whitehall area of Darwen.

This photograph shows the procession heading down Bolton Road towards the Circus after breakfast in their carriages.

The mayoral coach passes by James Gibson’s ironmongers with further up the street being Thomas Lawless’ barbers and tobacconist, James Harwood’s fine art dealers and Thomas Marsden’s cloggers in view. Also another interesting sight is the crowds lining the streets.
