IT WAS a row for life in February 1979 when the Accrington Canoeists Open Individual Slalom event was held at Hyndburn Sports Centre.

The event was the final one of the winter season and saw canoeists from across the borough winding up their practice in the sports centre's pool.

Julia Leach, pictured, bagged the coveted first place in the ladies section, while Wendy Davis won the Ladies Novice section.

Over in the men's corner, the winner of Group A - the experts - was Steve Miller. While Alec Rigby took first prize in the Group B section, which was reserved for experienced canoeists.

Graham Howarth won the best novice award.

The event was topped off by a sponsored Eskimo roll, which saw participants capsize before safely rolling themselves back up again. It raised £20 for club funds.
