LACK of parking and speeding motorists have topped a list of concerns for residents of a Ribble Valley village.

During the summer Ribble Valley councillors for Whalley, Joyce Holgate and Terry Hill, sent out more than 1,000 survey leaflets to people in the village and nearby Mitton and Little Mitton.

Coun Holgate said she and her ward-mate received more than 130 responses highlighting issues of real concern' to residents.

She said that 42 per cent of those who replied slammed the state of parking in King Street, Whalley, where traffic continues to bottle-neck.

Coun Holgate said part of the problem along this stretch was cars parking along either side of the road, meaning that two vehicles struggled to negotiate the tight space at the same time resulting in long queues through the village.

A further 42 per cent of the surveys highlighted the problem of speeding cars along Mitton Road, an issue Coun Holgate believed needed tackling.

She said: "The police have been out with their mobile speed cameras on this stretch but I would like to see them monitoring the speed on this road even more because people are going over the speed limit so much."

Other issues that were highlighted in the survey included dog fouling, littering and lack of a post box at Calderstones housing estate on the edge of the village.

Coun Holgate added: "We got some quite detailed responses and this survey gives us some ammunition to go to the council and say we need action.

"Many of the issues are county controlled but this means we have more power to tackle people's concerns."

The two councillors have been running a surgery at Whalley Village Hall on the first Saturday of every month and Coun Holgate said this had been successful in allowing people to express their views on village matters.

The next surgery is on November 3.
