A MAN who had been reduced to living in a tent after being thrown out by his wife stole a set of bike lights to use in his shelter.
Blackburn magistrates heard George Barnes was stopped as he tried to leave the Tesco store in Burnley and ended up spending the night in a police cell.
Barnes, 54, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft and possession of amphetamine. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £20 victim surcharge.
Mark Williams, defending, said Barnes had been out of trouble for five or six years and faced two very minor matters.
"His relationship with his wife of many years has broken down and he found himself on the street," said Mr Williams.
"He has been sleeping in a tent which is not ideal at this time of year."
