A MAN charged with the rape of a 15-year-old girl has appeared in court.

Nassar Iqbal, of Brierfield, denied raping and sexually assaulting the teenager in Burnley town centre on New Year's Day at Burnley Crown Court.

The 30-year-old, who has also been accused of stealing a white iPhone from the girl, appeared via video link from Preston Prison.

Speaking via a Punjabi interpreter, Mr Iqbal, of Castle Street, spoke only to give his name, date of birth and nationality.

Mr Iqbal pleaded not guilty to sexual assault, theft and rape.

He was remanded in custody until the trial starts on June 17 at Preston Crown Court.
