THIS photo from our archives shows the damage caused after a fire ripped through a Haslingden school, completely destroying the 125-year-old building.
St James C of E Primary School on Regent Street went up in flames in the early hours of January 24 1979. More than 60 firefighters tackled the blaze, which became increasingly difficult when water from the hoses froze due to the icy weather conditions, making the roads impassible.
Vicar, Reverend Andrew Ballard, said the school had been plagued by vandals, and in recent months there had been two attempts to set it on fire.
Councillor Dennis Lloyd said: "It looks as though the main building will have to be pulled down. It's a write off and the contents are completely destroyed."
