SPEED monitoring has been introduced on a residential road branded one of the most dangerous in a town following an accident in which an 11-year-old girl was injured.

Last month, Oswaldtwistle county councillor Peter Britcliffe called for action to improve safety on Harvey Street in the wake of the incident

Now Lancashire County Council has installed devices to monitor the speed of vehicles using the road on both its 20mph and 30mph stretches.

Cllr Britcliffe and his daughter Sara, who represents St Andrew's ward on Hyndburn Borough Council, have welcomed the prompt action.

They called on the county council to look at safety improvements and speeding enforcement after the air ambulance, North West Ambulance Service and police were called out after the girl was involved in a collision with a car on January 14.

County Cllr Britcliffe described Harvey Street, flanked on either side by playing fields, as ‘one of the most dangerous roads in Oswaldtwistle’.

He said: “I am pleased that Lancashire County Council has reacted so quickly and is now undertaking a speed survey with a view to improving safety along this stretch of road. Residents complain it is like a speed track.

“Over the years there have been many complaints about speeding traffic on this road, which adjoins playing fields”

Cllr Sara Britcliffe said: “This is welcome news. Let’s hope it leads to something being done to slow traffic down on this very dangerous road.

“As district councillor for this area I receive numerous complaints about speeding traffic and the open stretch of road is a favourite with boy racers.

“Either side of the road is flanked by sports fields and used by many young people. It is an accident waiting to happen. I hope following this survey further action can be taken to make this road safer.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We have ordered speed surveys to be carried out at two locations on Harvey Street. We’ll consider the results alongside the other information we have about safety at this location to inform any further actions.”

The girl was taken to hospital by road with minor injuries.
