A PERSON was taken to hospital after a basement fire in Burnley.

Crews from Burnley, Padiham and Nelson were called to reports of a fire at a property on Market Square, Burnley at around 11.30pm last night. 

On arrival, a fire was found in the basement of a property. 

A spokesman said: "Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel to extinguish the fire.

"There was one casualty at the incident who was assessed for the effects of smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital by ambulance crews.

"Firefighters were in attendance approximately 3 hours and  45 minutes."
