ANOTHER dusting of snow struck East Lancashire yesterday.

Rossendale took the brunt of the cold weather, with many bus services travelling to Haslingden were cancelled due to harsh conditions.

Community meetings and sports clubs across Haslingden were also cancelled.

The town's Lancashire County Council household waste recycling centre was shut due to snow.

Blackburn town centre was relatively unscathed by snow, apart from a light falling in the afternoon, but fortunately the flakes did not stick.

However snow fell in the town's outskirts, particularly the large junction in Haslingden Road, near Guide and the Grane Road, with drivers having to be cautious to avoid accidents.

Parents of children who attend Baxenden St John's Primary School were told they needed to collect their children at 1.15pm as the school was closing early.

Blackburn with Darwen Council has urged residents to use grit sparingly, with around one teaspoon worth able to cover around a square metre of path or road.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for snow and ice will continue into today and will be in place until 11am.

The highest temperature will be around 2C, with a minimum of -4C.

It was predicted there was a high chance of snow at 3am, with the likelihood of any flakes decreasing as the morning goes on.

Visibility will be poor with a chance of mist around 5am, before it improves slightly.

There might be snowfall at around 1pm, with the likelihood of seeing snowflakes at 50 per cent, and visibility will become poor.

Lancashire County Council's highways manager, Dwayne Lowe, said motorists should park with enough room available to let gritters get through.

He said: "Our drivers have real problems trying to get through on parts of some gritting routes because people are badly parked.

"We're concerned that some roads which should be gritted could become icy over the coming days if the gritters can't get through."

Combined, the county council and Blackburn with Darwen Council has almost 2,000miles of priority roads which are gritted whenever a freeze is forecast.
