AN MP has revealed he received threatening messages from a constituent.

Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry received a surprise visit from the man while having lunch with his wife and two children at Rawtenstall's Costa Coffee on Saturday.

In front of Mr Berry's family, the constituent asked the Northern Powerhouse minister when he can meet him again. Mr Berry replied: "When you stop sending me threatening messages."

Following the incident, the Pub's minister took to Twitter, saying this incident shows how an MP's job puts pressure on family life. He tweeted: "You only realise the strain this job puts on your family when you go out for lunch and whilst you are sat at a table with your kids someone approaches and says 'when can I come and see you again' for you to answer 'when you stop sending me threatening messages'."

The dad-of-two later explained his decision to tweet his message and said: "It was not aggressive. The man who came over was not too bad but sadly this is part of the job."

The Conservative MP did not reveal what threats had been made to him but did say it had got worse since the EU Referendum took place in June 2016.

He added: "It's got worse over the last couple of years but it's part of the job.

"MPs serve the public and that's the job. I love my job and I would not have it any other way."

Mr Berry's revelation about message threats comes just two weeks after one of his colleagues, Anna Soubry, was verbally abused and called a 'Nazi' by protestors outside London's Parliament.
