A MAN was caught in the act of stealing lead from a roof after a neighbour gave police a running commentary.

Blackburn magistrates heard Simon Vincent was in possession of the lead flashing he had removed when police arrived.

Vincent, 26, of Thornbrook Lane, Bacup, pleaded guilty to theft of lead flashing worth £600 belonging to Gordon Speed.

He was sentenced to four weeks in custody and a further four weeks for being in breach of a suspended prison sentence.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Vincent was subject to post sentence supervision and things had been going well for him.

"He split from his girlfriend which left him struggling for accommodation and there was a reduction in his benefits," said Mr Taylor.

"He owes money and while he was out walking he saw an opportunity."
