HERE is a fantastic picture of Blackburn Road, in Accrington, taken in around 1900.

The image from the Lancashire Telegraph archives is looking towards the town centre.

And the row of shops on the block leading to Portland Street still stands.

The larger building in the centre of the picture houses Heaton's furniture and floor-coverings shop.

Around this time, Accrington Corporation was developing its electricity works whose power was about to spell the demise of the town's 'Baltic Fleet' of steam-hauled trains, like the one seen here trundling towards Church.

Perhaps you have a tale to tell about Blackburn Road. If so we’d love to hear from you.
