A CLITHEROE man who smashed the window of his neighbour's flat with a metal bar could not explain why.

Blackburn magistrates heard the New Year's Day attack was followed by five offences of shoplifting.

James Parker, 27, of Bawdlands Farm House, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to four offences of stealing food and drink from Primrose Garage, one of stealing two bottles of wine from Premier Store and damaging a window belonging to Richard Balderson.

He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with nine months alcohol treatment requirement, a curfew between 8pm and 6am for four weeks and ordered to pay £317 compensation.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said Mr Balderson lived in the flat above the defendant and was at home at 7.45 pm when he heard him banging on his door and shouting and swearing.

The window eventually smashed and a man who lived across the road said he had done it with a metal bar.

Police who attended said Parker appeared to be drunk and they seized two metal poles.

Scott Parker, defending, said it was clear there were ongoing alcohol misuse issues.

"He is very ashamed of his behaviour and accepts there is a problem that needs addressing," said Mr Parker.
