In a bid to boost the fitness and diet of those in East Lancs, a social enterprise is encouraging people to grow their own vegetables throughout 2019.

Newground, which is part of the Together Housing Group, is launching a series of workshops at their base in Burnley, to teach people the art of horticulture.

The workshops will take place on the first Friday of every month (apart from March when it will be the second Friday), from 1pm until 3.30pm at Offshoots Garden, Towneley Hall.

Gardening Coach Chloe Ellis said: "There are many benefits to growing your own fruit and vegetables. Not only are planting, weeding, watering and harvesting a good form of physical activity, but gardening is also a great way to relax and get some fresh air."

Aimed at beginners, the workshops will show people how to build healthy soil in a low cost way, plan their own growing space, choose and harvest crops, and care for their gardens.

Miss Ellis continued: "The vitamin content will be at their highest as you bite into your vegetables straight from the garden and it will taste better than shop bought produce.

"You’ll also save money on your grocery bills and reduce your environmental impact and food waste."

The workshops will last for 11 weeks starting from February and will cost £20 per session or can be booked as a block for £132.
