Eight children from across East Lancs were treated to a day out with a difference, when they were entertained by firefighters at Blackburn Fire Station.

The day was arranged by Station Manager, Neil Hardiman, after crews donated the experience to the Secret Santa appeal in the run up to Christmas.

As well as getting to dress up as fire-fighters, the youngsters were given a guided tour of the fire station, a talk about the tools firefighters use, and a turn at holding the hose.

They were even allowed into the fire engines to turn on the lights and sirens.

Kathryn Newell Burton, mum to George, nine, and Neve, 12, said: "I want to say a big thank you to everyone involved. My two loved the experience and now George wants to be a fireman.

"It wasn’t only the kids who enjoyed it, the adults also had an amazing time, with lots of giggles. A truly enjoyable experience."

Station Manager Hardiman added: "As well as the excitement of the visit, the youngsters learned the practicalities of saving lives and were given information about house fires and how to escape one.

"We hope it was an educational experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives."
