BLACKBURN Rovers' oldest fan received a heartfelt video message from club stars on her 103rd birthday.

Clara Aspen, who has supported Rovers all her life, received the message from Rovers boss Tony Mowbray and club captain Charlie Mulgrew.

In the video, which was shared on the official Blackburn Rovers Twitter page, Mulgrew, who surprised Clara with a visit and cake last year, talks of how she brought them good luck with their promotion.

He said: “Happy birthday Clara. Can’t believe it’s a year ago since I came and saw you for your 102nd birthday. You brought us luck last time, we got promotion when I spoke to you, so hopefully a bit of luck again.

“Thanks for your support throughout the years and I hope we can do you proud.

“From everyone here at Blackburn, have a great day.”

Clara, a resident at Brierfield House Care Home in Nelson, is a big fan of Mulgrew, but her favourite player of all time is Alan Shearer – who played for Rovers from 1992 to 1996.

Also wishing her a happy birthday was Mowbray, who said: “We would like to wish you a very, very happy birthday and thank you for your continued support over such a long time.”

Activities co-ordinator at Brierfield House Care Home, Jackie Connelly, said Clara had no idea Rovers had made a video message for her birthday.

Mrs Connelly said: “When we show her the video later she’ll be so excited. We all think she’s amazing. She’s still got all her faculties and listens to Rovers on the radio and watches the games whenever she can.

“Clara had cakes and lots of visitors yesterday and she said she feels great."

“She been in good spirits this year and we hope she’ll reach her 104th birthday in 2020.”
