WINTER is here so of course it's also pothole season - and seeing as it's National Pothole Day, we're hoping to find East Lancashire's biggest.

Our inbox is regularly filled with pothole complaints at this time of year.

But it turns out we're not the only patch with problem potholes - and some of them are rather unusual.

Our sister title The Swindon Advertiser reported one man has taken to filling potholes with creepy doll heads in an attempt to make the council aware of the problem.

Dad-of-three Neville Daytona told the Swindon Advertiser: “The roads are disgusting. Everyone’s moaning about it.

“So I thought I’d do something amusing about it.

“It’s childish, it’s clean humour and it’s just funny.

“If it makes someone smile it’s worth it.”

Unfortunately it didn't appear to immediately help as the pothole was then fenced off together with one lane of the road, forcing traffic to slow down.

Neville is not the only 'pothole warrior'.

He took inspiration from the self-styled 'W*nksy' - a crude play on street artist Banksy - who decided to draw penis graffiti around potholes in Ramsbottom.

The mystery 'artist' made national headlines in 2015 and returned again in 2016.

Speaking at the time, Bury Council said: "Painting obscenities around potholes will not get them repaired any quicker, but simply waste valuable time and resources."

A whole new meaning to potted plants

While in Bichester in Oxfordshire last year, residents planted flowers in potholes to help the town live up to its Garden Town status.

Two residents filled in 13 potholes with soil and flowers after being inspired by a Facebook video.

While many approved others warned 'it's a lovely idea but could pose a problem to cyclists'.

There's lots of potholes near me, what should I do?

The easiest thing to do is report it to the council as they can only fill them in if they know about them.

Alternatively you could report it to Fillthathole.org.uk

The website was set up more than 10 years ago as a way of reporting hazards.

The site suggests you should FillThatHole if you would like the report to be public so others can see that the pothole has been reported, you want to report the hazard anonymously and you would like to contribute it to a national database of potholes.

But it does add to report it to the highway authority’s site first if 'you want the hole fixed particularly quickly as FillThatHole may introduce a slight delay before the report gets into the highway authority’s system'.

Where do you think is the biggest pothole in East Lancs?
