AS the new year rolls in, popular TV chef Nigel Haworth talks about eating healthy, overcoming food fears, and his plans for the year ahead.

After taking a step back from his Northcote restaurant, Mr Haworth plans to spend more time at home with his family, and to focus on enjoying his life.

The celebrity chef, who has appeared on shows like MasterChef and Great British Menu, gives his advice on sticking to healthy eating new year resolutions.

He said: “My thoughts would be to eat all the exciting food that’s out there but eat less carbs and more vegetables.

“I really think that eating more vegetables and a better balance of protein is the way forward. For example, a butternut squash curry, and give yourself less rice and more veg. This will fill you up but is light and healthy.

Mr Haworth suggests sourdough bread as a replacement to other bread, adding the health benefits are good for digestion.

For mornings, his smoothie recipe of avocado, banana and spinach smoothie is really filling but perfect for a fuelled morning breakfast.

To make it, blend half a banana, avocado, and a handful of spinach with five chunks of ice, coconut water, a tablespoon of macca root powder, and water.

Some people may be keen to try out new foods this year, as the chef suggests how to overcome food fears.

He said: “If you’re interested in overcoming your fears, read up on the food itself and then understand if they are good for you. Partner it with your favourite food, that usually works.”

As social media remains prevalent to people’s lives, Mr Haworth discusses the popularity of flood bloggers and instagrammers.

He said: “Bloggers are popular because we are really dependent on social media and what food bloggers have to say.

“I follow Andy Hayler, who has eaten in more Michelin Starred restaurants than anybody else.”

Finally, the star chef talks about why he chose to take a lesser role at his Northcote restaurant.

He said: “I took a lesser role after 34 years to be at home more and to spend time with my family, and to have time to do other projects which may unfold in 2019.

“My plans are to enjoy cooking and life more now that I have more time. My new year resolution is to try and give something back to younger people in my profession.”
