FOUR raiders who burgled a young couple’s home in East Lancashire as they slept have been jailed for nearly 10 years between them.

CCTV cameras caught the gang responsible for breaking into the Accrington home of Calum Hartley and his pregnant partner, Burnley Crown Court was told.

Footage showed at least two of them climbing in through an open window and later captured Mr Hartley’s Vauxhall Astra being driven away, the court heard.

Police were able to use the security film to trace four suspects - Cailen Hackett, Aaron Walsh, Luke Entwistle and Jordan Woodburn.

Prosecutor Haseeb Usaf said all four either made denials or refused to comment when initially quizzed about the break-in, in Stanley Street, on June 20 last year.

But Hackett, 22, of no fixed address, Walsh, 21, of Spring Street, Rishton, Entwistle, 25, and Woodburn, 20, both of Lower Barnes Street, Clayton, later pleaded guilty to burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. Entwistle also pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis.

Judge Jonathan Gibson sentenced both Entwistle and Walsh, who had two previous convictions each for house burglaries, to 34 months in jail.

Hackett was imprisoned for 27 months and Woodburn for 22 months.

Mr Usaf said the victim, Mr Hartley, went to bed at around 10pm but had left a living room window open.

He awoke next morning to go to work and couldn’t find the keys to his car, which was parked in nearby Essex Street. He also realised a handbag, containing his partner’s medication and £10 in cash, was also missing, the court heard.

The Astra was later found by police in Clayton-le-Moors, but it was displaying registration plates which had been stolen from another vehicle.

Mr Usaf said that CCTV footage was obtained from neighbours, in which four men could be seen approaching the house.

One of the quartet tried the front door, the court heard, before they spotted the open window.

The court was told that Walsh was arrested at his home the next day, while Woodburn and Entwistle were each detained three days later. Hackett was serving a sentence for another offence when police caught up with him at Preston Prison.
