FIREFIGHTERS are calling on firms and the public not to fly-tip after youths started a bonfire near an industrial estate last night.

The incident took place at 8.15pm on January 2 as a crew from Hyndburn were called to put out a small bonfire on vacant land off Huncoat Industrial Estate on Bolton Avenue.

Watch manager Mike Birks said: "It was just some rubbish and waste left and there were some youths who had made a small bonfire.

"It could be noticed from the street and when we arrived the youths ran off.

"But they had just moved stuff that had been scrapped so we would urge people not to fly-tip or leave rubbish.

"The problem was people leaving rubbish there and if people did that then the youths would not have done it.

"But it was a nuisance fire and while we were out at that job there could have been something more serious that we would not have been able to attend.

"Another crew would have had to go out to it and we could have attended."
