THE controversial issue of parking charges in Hyndburn will be discussed at the full meeting of the borough council on January 10.

Two separate motions on the subject have been tabled for debate by councillors.

The first, moved by Overton's Cllr Gareth Molyneux, asks the borough to write to Lancashire Council calling for the authority to abandon proposals to introduce charges for on street parking in Great Harwood.

It says: "This is a regressive move for the high street shops in Great Harwood and will drive customers away. The changes in the retail sector means we need to be innovative in our approach in supporting our high street and this goes against that."

The second, from Immanuel ward's Cllr Judith Addison, objects to charges and fines levied on the multi-storey car park at Accrington's Arndale Centre since March 2016.

It refers to 'recent bad publicity for car parking fines' there including a couple whose August trip back to the shops for a bottle of milk cost them £100.

The motion asks leader Cllr Miles Parkinson to update the meeting 'on what this council is doing to safeguard Accrington’s free parking reputation and ensure that any future visitors aren’t penalised for making a simple mistake?'
