ROAD users are told to expect delays tonight (December 19) after a gas leak has been found on the A590.

The leak has been found underneath Ulverston and Barrow, which requires work to stop the gas spreading.

Cadent, which manages the gas mains under roads of south Cumbria said the situation is under control.

Kevin Hegarty, a spokesman for Cadent said:"The most important thing is that everything is under control, there is no risk to anyone’s safety and we are monitoring gas readings regularly. But this needs fixing to stop it getting any worse.

“We have agreed with Highways England that we will work this evening – between 8pm and around 10.30pm near Swarthmoor.

"We need to identify the source of the leak and plan the repair. We will ensure the A590 stays open with traffic lights managing the flow of vehicles around our work area.

“These lights will be removed once this investigative work is done tonight. We will then liaise with Highways England to agree how we’ll manage and time the work to repair the pipe. We have already indicated that we can do this over the Christmas period, while the roads are likely to be less busy.

“We hope people understand this is necessary and essential work, to ensure everyone’s safety and maintain a reliable gas supply for your central heating systems this winter.”
