TODAY’s delve into the Lancashire Telegraph archives takes a stroll down a major town centre street.

The picture shows Market Street, Bacup, looking towards the town centre, with the King George V Hotel on the corner of Burnley Road.

All the property on the right has since been demolished.

On the right at the corner of Tower Street is an Altham’s tea store, once a familiar feature of most East Lancashire towns, but now better known as a travel agency business.

The interest in this picture, taken in the 1930s, is the block of shops on the right and the traffic lights in the centre of Bacup, with a car stopped on the right hand side of the road.

It has probably driven down Todmorden Road.

But who can remember a one-way system here and knows of the route to Yorkshire Street from the camera position, by the other set of lights?

The left hand side of the street was also once home to the first Conservative Club which opened in about 1887 in premises that had once been used by the YMCA.

During the Great War, the building was redeveloped and a billiard hall opened.

Perhaps you have a tale to tell about Market Street or a fond memory from back in the day. If so we’d love to hear from you.
