I like lists. They normally tell me something I need to know.

But I don’t like lists which disparage a whole town.

Take for instance a recent list which put Blackburn in the top 10 worst towns in the UK. Our fair town was ninth – poor old Huddersfield gained top spot.

Why it was named the worst place to live in the UK is beyond me. I have been to Huddersfield – it wasn’t too bad. I have travelled to a lot worse.

The issue is, it is not fair to just judge a town on a few small areas. I could go anywhere in the UK right now and find myself spotting something I don’t like. It does not mean the whole place is a mess.

Even worse, I find that people like moaning about where they live and do nothing about it.

This has got to be most annoying thing ever. We always think it is the responsibility of someone else to fix things while we flick through our WhatsApp messages in the comfort of our own homes with our feet up.

Blackburn has a lot of great things going for it and in the last 20 years has got a lot better.

The people are same. Some are a miserable bunch while others are the friendliest and most helpful you would find anywhere.

Some of them like to blame other cultures for their problems while others realise that it has little to do with backgrounds but it has more to do with actions and who you are.

One recent visitor to the town told me on a drizzle-swept evening that Blackburn was very much like San Francisco but without the good weather and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Yes, even I was taken aback but then hear me out.

It all had to do with Bromley Street. Where else on the planet would you find a street so ridiculously steep that those seeing it for the first time are taken back by the sheer…well…steepness of it?

It certainly takes some beating. You have to admit it takes some real Lancashire grit to spot a hill and then decide to build a row of houses on it.

We all know there are downsides most towns but do we really need to moan about them all the time?

Even I let bus lanes and road layouts get the better of me (as regular readers will know)...

But if you don’t like it here then there are plenty of other places in the world you could go instead.
