A MUM died after falling down a flight of stairs in her home, an inquest heard.

Lorna Whitaker was found unconscious in her Blackburn house by her daughter at the bottom of the stairs on October 11.

Preston Coroners Court heard the 76-year-old had to be taken to Royal Preston Hospital and was found to have multiple skull fractures.

Ms Whitaker died four days later at hospital as she was unfit for surgery, the coroner Richard Taylor said.

The court heard the Blackburn mother had suffered from recurrent falls throughout her lifetime.

When the daughter found her mother at around 11pm on October 11 at Mickle Ridge, on Pleasington Lane, Ms Whitaker had suffered serious head injuries, which caused bleeding to the brain.

Doctors said the pensioner was not fit enough for surgery due to the extent of her injuries.

Returning a conclusion of accidental death, Mr Taylor said: "I will return a conclusion of accidental death.

"Lorna died at Royal Preston Hospital on October 15 from an injury sustained in an unwitnessed fall downstairs at her home at about 11pm on October 11.

"She was found unconscious by her daughter at her home and suffered from recurrent falls."
