BLACKBURN'S all-action youth zone is set to benefit from a substantial early Christmas present, the Telegraph can reveal.

One of the major patrons of the Jubilee Street complex has made a considerable donation to fund a complete flooring overhaul for the recreation areas.

And as a result the outfit is offering a series of festive outings to help young people burn off their festive energy, it has been confirmed.

Jack Straw, the former Blackburn MP and youth zone chairman, said: "We are replacing the flooring in all of the main parts of the youth zone which, unfortunately, will require us to close over Christmas.

"The centre has been open now for six years, and with 900 youngsters a week coming through our doors the surfaces have taken a bit of a pounding.

"We have been lucky that one of our major patrons, who wishes to remain anonymous, has agreed to fund the work."

Because of the maintenance operation, the youth zone will be closed from Thursday, December 22, to Monday, January 7.

A Blackburn Youth Zone spokesman added: "During this time we have planned a range of exciting day trips which can be booked with a member of staff.

"We look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year to see our new refreshed building."

Youth zone bosses already had reason to celebrate after one of their longstanding backers, the Blackburn-based JMWM Hussain Foundation, confirmed it was continuing its support for the venture.

Majid Hussain, a foundation trustee, said: "Over the last six years, the youth zone has demonstrated its value to the local community in providing a safe and controlled environment for youngsters to develop skills as well as enjoying leisure opportunities."
