A CANDLE was responsible for a fire in a family home.

Two fire engines from Blackburn attended the address on Skelshaw Close, Blackburn, at around 9.30pm on Friday.

The blaze broke out thanks to a candle which was lit in a bedroom of the property.

Firefighters with breathing equipment used one hose reel to extinguish the fire.

A fire spokesperson issued advice for those using candles following the incident, saying: "Candle fires increased by 26 per cent last year.

"Candles bring fire into your home and they need to be treated carefully.

"Always ensure candles are secured in a proper holder, keep them away from any materials that may catch fire, like curtains and paper.

"Take extra care when you are wearing loose clothing around candles and don't put them on the side of the bath or on the TV."
