TWO pensioners are fighting for their lives after a serious crash in Clitheroe.

Whalley Road was closed for nearly three hours following the head-on crash involving a blue Honda Jazz car and a white Ford Transit van, which happened at 2.30pm yesterday.

Police said the driver of the Honda, a 90-year-old man suffered serious internal injuries, while a 93-year-old woman in the vehicle suffered serious back and internal injuries.

She was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital, while the man was taken there by road ambulance.

Both are in what have been described by police and critical but stable conditions.

The driver of the Ford, a 30-year-old man from Accrington, was not injured.

Police are now appealing for information and urging any witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Andy Ainsworth said: “An investigation is underway following a serious collision in Clitheroe.

“If you saw what happened and have yet to speak with police, please get in touch.

“Furthermore, if you have any dashboard mounted camera footage of the incident, call us.”
