A car collided with a lamp post, sending one of its wheels flying into oncoming traffic.

Fire crews were called to the crash on Whitebirk Drive, Blackburn, at around 6.10pm on Sunday.

A fire service spokesman said: "We were called to an incident in which a Silver Peugeot had lost control and hit a lamp post.

"As a result of the collision, one of the wheels came off the car, flew into the air and hit another car.

"Luckily, there was no damage to the other vehicle or the driver, but the driver of the Peugeot was trapped, and had to be cut out using spreaders.

"The man, who was in his 50s, was also complaining of lower back and ankle pain and was taken to hospital by ambulance staff."

There was one other passenger in the car with the driver, but they did not sustain any injuries.

Crews were detained for one hour, and the road was closed for 30 minutes while the incident was dealt with.
