AN historic church has received a National Lottery grant of more than £39,000 for an exciting heritage and repair project.

St James' Church in Altham will see repairs to its chancel roof and develop a variety of heritage activities.

The money will also cover the cost of providing guided tours and it will help researchers look back into the people associated with the church and the village.

Work on the necessary research and planning will start before the end of this year.

It is expected the work will be completed by next summer.

Reverend Toby Webber, the church's vicar, said he was delighted with the substantial grant.

He said: "Looking after a historic building is an expensive responsibility and a heavy one for a small congregation in a small village like Altham.

"Two years ago we repaired the roof of the nave.

"Now, thanks to this grant, we can make sure the chancel roof is secure and watertight for the next few generations."

The ancient church was built in the year 1512, just three years after Henry VIII was crowned king of England.

The venerable Mark Ireland, Archdeacon of Blackburn, said: “I am delighted to hear about the award of a grant for St. James’ Church Altham.

“Restoring the chancel roof is a vital step in maintaining this historic building which serves all the people of the parish in times of need and of joy.

“This grant helps to ensure this ancient building has a secure future, as does the lively and dedicated congregation who worship there.

“I would congratulate the churchwardens and project team for all their hard work to keep this building open and serving the needs of the community”.

The grant will cover 67 per cent of the repair cost.
