A MICROWAVE caught fire at a house in Accrington.

Fire crews were called to Hawksworth Road at around 3.45am this morning.

A fire service spokesman said some food inside a microwave had caught fire and damaged it.

He said: "The person living in the house had been upstairs and asleep called the fire service after seeing the smoke.

"When we arrived the food had burnt itself out so we mainly had to get rid of the smoke with a ventilation fan.

"The lower floor of the property had suffered smoke damage but there was no fire damage.

"The occupant did not suffer any injuries either.

"A fire alarm was fitted but due to its location it did not detect the smoke."
