A HIGH school football team hit the back of the net in 1966, in what was possibly the biggest clean-up of trophies for school soccer in years.

Three teams from St Theodore’s in Burnley scored themselves wins in three different competitions and were on target to bag a further two, including an award for best football of the season.

The over-14's A-Team walked away with the Coldstream Cup; the under-14's B-Team won the Luke Thornber Shield for triumphing in the B Division championship of Burnley; and the under-12's D-Team collared the President's Shield.

In December, the A-Team lads were hoping to run all the way to end of season glory and lift the A Division championship trophy.

And to top it all off, the school was expected to net the award for best football of the season for the fourth year in a row.

The magnificent record of all the teams was put down to the managers in charge of each side and the stoic enthusiasm shown by the boys, who were all dedicated to training, making full use of the all-weather pitch at St Theodore's.

However, there may have been an ulterior motive for the lads performing so well, as they were eager to beat rivals, Rosegrove, who were joint winners of last season's Lancashire Champion Schools Cup.
