RESIDENTS of a Blackburn road have petitioned councillors to make it one-way to stop motorists rowing angrily in the middle of it.

A total of 27 householders of Brookfield Street in Shear Brow signed the document.

They claimed that since the imposition of a one-way order on nearby Blackburn Street there had been an increase in traffic and non-residents parking outside their homes.

Brookfield Street is links Whalley Street to Carr Street, and is situated close the Whalley Range Bazaar area.

The petition to members of Blackburn with Darwen Borough planning and highway committee says there have been heated arguments and near physical violence due to drivers refusing to give way to each other.

It claims vehicles are having to reverse up Brookfield Street due to on coming vehicles entering from Carr Street.

The petitioners also complain of increased noise levels due to car horns and rise in litter and anti-social behaviour.

As a result residents say they are scared to allow their children out on the street.

A report to councillors from borough highways officers says: "There have been no corroborating reports received.

"Despite the issues alleged, these are problems not solely affecting Brookfield Street but many streets in the immediate vicinity.

"Should the petition be approved it will only move the issues to surrounding streets and add to the existing issues being experienced by those residents."

The committee supported the officers' recommendation to reject the request for the introduction of a one-way system on Brookfield Street.
