DARWEN may have changed its looks over the years - but its always remained as a very special place to be.

In this week’s edition of Bygones we look at the first and the last moments of some iconic sites in the town.

The Theatre Royal Cinema in Railway Road which was a popular place to visit, became the McKillup Arms Hotel in the late 1950s and was sadly demolished and now stands Chippy’s taxi service.

To the bottom left, the iconic Jubilee Tower was opened in September 1898 and has proudly watched over the town since.

The drawing on the right shows a very different looking Darwen town centre in 1878, featuring the Angel Inn pub and other lost buildings.

The bottom right image shows a precession including the High Sheriff W.B Huntington walking down Bolton Road in April 1898, walking past a bits and bobs shop, a hardware store and a wholesale and retail spirit store.
