A DISQUALIFIED driver was found asleep in a car with the engine running at 1.30am.

Blackburn magistrates heard the front end of the car was on the pavement and the rear sticking out into the road.

And Anthony Adam Clegg, who was behind the wheel, gave a breathalyser reading of more than double the legal limit.

Clegg, 30, of Edgeside, Great Harwood, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, with excess alcohol and without insurance.

He was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months with a requirement to complete the drink impaired drivers course and 120 hours unpaid work. He was banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay £85 costs and £115 victim surcharge.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said Clegg had a conviction for driving with excess alcohol in 2016 and had been banned again in March for driving while disqualified.

On Friday night police saw a car in Clayton Street, Great Harwood, with the front end blocking the pavement and the rear end in the road.

Richard Prew, defending, said Clegg had been drinking at home with his girlfriend when there was a row.

"To defuse the situation he went to a friend's house in Clayton Street," he said. "Because of the late hour he didn't want him in the house but said he could sleep in the car and keep warm.

"He accepts that at some point he must have started the engine and moved the car because he ended up on the pavement."
