A MAN was detained by police after armed officers were called to a flat in Padgate yesterday, Wednesday.

Officers were contacted by paramedics following concerns for the safety of a 48-year-old man at a flat on Biggin Court.

Police – including firearms officers – attended the scene at 4.40pm.

Neighbour Lesley Willis, who has lived on the street for three years, feared the worst when she saw armed police near her home.

The 42-year-old said: “It was my son who said that there were armed police on the street.

“I was watching what was happening from the window. There were some police at the front of the flat and some round the back."

It is understood police remained at the scene for around an hour.

“I was worried for the safety of my children," she said.

“My youngest child normally goes to football training but I wasn’t going to let him go last night as we didn’t know what was going on.

“You worry that he might have a weapon when you see armed police.

“I couldn’t believe it as it’s normally pretty quiet around here."

A man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of affray and wasting police time.

The suspect remains in police custody where he is assisting officers with their enquiries.
