AN exhibition telling the story of the creation of Accrington’s new Town Square at the town's Haworth Art Gallery will be officially opened by Church actress Julie Hesmondhalgh tonight.
It has four galleries to visit showcasing 200 years of development and change.
Commemorating the sacrifice and bravery of the Accrington Pals and all who fell in the Great War, the Square is the centrepiece of the Townscape Heritage Initiative project supported by grants from the National Lottery.
The ‘Transforming our town, Accrington through the years’ exhibition tells the story through architecture, retail and historic images.
It includes an explanation of the design and manufacture of the duckboard trench benches and the two bronze dogs and a squirrel statues that greet people passing through the Square.
One gallery is dedicated to amazing people of Accrington including extraordinary women, the Accrington Pals and Accrington Stanley Football Club.
The exhibition will be open during normal gallery hours until February 2. This Sunday will be a special family day
