'WINTER grit squads' have been formed by Blackburn with Darwen Council to help vulnerable people during cold weather.
The project has several volunteer groups throughout the borough who are tasked with making sure those who are vulnerable in the area have enough help.
When bad weather is set to fall, the squads go out and grit certain areas and clear snow from paths if needed to.
The council has agreed to provide one ton of grit to each of the squads, as well shovels, spades, high-vis jackets and gloves.
Jason Walker, the main volunteer contact for Roe Lee, said: "I have personally extended this service to include any help with going to nearby shops for people unable to leave their homes due to illness or bad weather and to help with the removal of fallen trees, branches and litter."
Ward councillors will also be supporting the winter squads.
