BOSSES tipped off by another member of staff checked CCTV and saw another employee dipping his fingers in the till.
Blackburn magistrates heard Robert Wilshee, who had no previous convictions, stole £40.
And the chairman of the magistrates said it was hard to believe he had sacrificed his good name for such a paltry sum.
Wilshee, 32, of Heyfold Gardens, Darwen, pleaded guilty to theft of £40 from GAP, Shadsworth. He was fined £250 with £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
Parveen Akhtar, prosecuting, said when management viewed the CCTV they saw Wilshee remove two £20 notes from the till and put them in his pocket. He later admitted making a false refund in order to cover his tracks.
Helen Farnsworth, defending, said her client was very sorry for what he had done.
"It was a moment of stupidity on his part," said Mrs Farnsworth.
She said Wilshee was due to start a new job on Monday and was also due to get married later this year.
