PRIME Minister Theresa May's controversial Brexit deal has divided East Lancashire's three Conservative MPs.

Yesterday Ribble Valley Tory backbencher Nigel Evans vowed to vote against the 585-page plan when it comes to Parliament next month.

But Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson and Rossendale and Darwen's Jake Berry will support it.

Both will remain ministers despite several resignations from government after the agreement outlining the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union was published on Thursday,

Mr Evans will vote with East Lancashire's three Labour MPs - Blackburn's Kate Hollern, Hyndburn's Graham Jones and Burnley's Julie Cooper - when the deal is debated in the House of Commons.

Mr Evans, like Mr Stephenson a leading pro-Brexit campaigner, said Mrs May's document was not what people voted for n 2016's referendum

He said: “The negotiation has conceded far too much ground on all the key points.

“This deal prevents us from leaving the very institutions that tie us to the EU, and therefore it prevents the UK from benefitting from the advantages Brexit could bring. Most importantly, this deal is a betrayal of the 17.4million people who voted to leave the European Union.”

Government whip Mr Stephenson said: “I am remaining in government and I shall vote for the deal. There are many people who want to frustrate Brexit and the will of the people.

“I believe the Prime Minister’s deal honours the outcome of the referendum and therefore I have no problems in voting for it.”

Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry said: “I am remaining in government to ensure we get the Brexit my constituents voted for.

“I shall be voting for the deal to ensure the UK’s transition out the the European Union. You don’t get everything you ask for in a negotiation.

Mrs Hollern said:“Unless there are dramatic changes, I would expect to vote against it."

“When the Brexit secretary resigns, it shows how little confidence even Mrs May’s own party have in the deal.”

Mr Jones said: “I shall be voting against because it hands even more sovereignty and control over our laws than the current position and I don’t want to see us hand the EU £39billion for nothing."

Mrs Cooper said: "The deal as it stands is the worst of all worlds . It is ridiculous and I cannot vote for it nor do I accept the alternative is ‘no deal’."
