JUSTIN Brett answers the phone to do our interview having just got off a plane from Mexico. It’s the kind of scenario which could easily find its way into Showstopper! The Improvised Musical which is coming to Colne Muni next Friday.

A major West End hit, Showstopper! is exactly what it says on the poster - a totally improvised production from start to finish.

“I can guarantee that other than we know it will begin, have something happen in the middle and then finish at a certain time and there will be songs, that’s all we know about what will happen on the night,” said Justin.

“There are quite a few conspiracy theories about us having earpieces or plants in the audience but the truth is that we have been doing it for a while now and we’re quite good at it.”

Showstopper! has been delighting audiences for 10 years and still has a regular home in the West End.

“We get to take over the theatre that Thriller Live is in when they have a Monday off,” said Justin, “but we’re not allowed anywhere near their set!”

The audience play a massive part in the show.

“We have a go between who comes on at the beginning and chats to the audience. The premise is that the producer wants and play and it the experts in musical theatre in the audience who will write it,” said Justin.

“They will suggest various settings for the show and then the one with the biggest cheer will become the basis for the night. The audience then suggests various musical theatre styles which are written on a board and we guarantee to do a song in that style at some point.”

Shows have been set on a pirate ship in space or in Ikea with the cast literally making it up as they go along

“The thing about an improvised show is that there aren’t any mistakes,” said Justin, “You just react to what’s going on. For us as actors there’s a real joy to be part of that.

“I love the fact that it is fresh every day and that the creative process is an active thing.

“It’s not lot like you have learned your lines and know where to stand and then have to do that every night. We can play any part in any musical on any given night. I can be a romantic lead, an old lady or a stuffed bear – it’s all possible.”

Justin was part of the hugely successful show Million Dollar Quartet and was in the West End for a year before joining Showstopper!

“Being part of Showstopper! rekindled my love for theatre and performing,” he said.

“If I do scripted work now, weirdly I find it much more stressful because I know there’s something that I can mess up.”

Fellow actors have a tremendous amount of respect for the cast of Showstopper!

“I think people really respect the craft,” said Justin. “We are walking that tightrope every night without a safety net and audience love the fact that they can make it wobble a bit.”
