BLACKBURN Hindu Centre is holding a community celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Lights later this month.

Diwali is a major Hindu festival celebrating the victory of good over evil, based on the story of Ramayana.

The name Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali which means ‘Cluster of Lights’.

Hindus gather to celebrate exchange sweets and set off fireworks. This year it is on Wednesday November 7.

Ashok Chudasama, President of Blackburn Hindu Centre based in Bangor Street, said:“Diwali forms a five day festival which includes the last three days of the Hindu calendar and the first two days of the New Year."

He added: "I would like to take this opportunity to wish the whole community a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous New Year."
